Police investigating after young children left in parked car while their mom shopped

SURREY — Surrey Mounties say two young children who were left inside a parked car while their mom went grocery shopping last Thursday afternoon in Newton were not harmed physically or found to be in distress.

Police said the car was locked and left running with the air-conditioning on. “They were left in the car for at least ten minutes,” Sergeant Alanna Dunlop said.

Their investigation remains open and the Ministry of Children and Family Development was notified about the incident, in a mall parking lot in the 7300-block of King George Boulevard.

The children are ages three and one.

Police note a toddler can easily engage a vehicle’s transmission, setting the automobile in motion.
