Student athletes from Fernie Secondary School (FSS) were recognized for their outstanding work this year in a mobile sports award parade.

FSS athletic director Meghan Coultry arranged to drive around to the athletes’ homes and present them with their achievement awards as a way to celebrate their sporting accomplishments in a socially distant manner.

“The Falcons had a very successful cross country running, volleyball and basketball season,” Coultry said. “The participation levels were high this year and our teams were successful at many tournaments this year.”

Cross country running coaches Rachel Romero and Helen McAllister helped students train three times a week after school from Septemeber to November. In mid October, 15 FSS students travelled to Kimberley to compete in the East Kootenay Zone race, hosted by Selkirk Secondary School. Three grade twelves, all of whom where international students, qualified for the provincial cross country running championships at this event.

On November 2, Lotte Krallinger, Julia Cases Bazarra and Maxima Fechner represented FSS as the Cross Country Provincials in Abbotsford. The three students ran their hearts out and made their coaches proud.

Romero and McAllister weren’t the only proud coaches this year though.

The senior girls volleyball team found success at the B.C. high school provincials this season, earning themselves shiny silver medals after playing strong and competitive volleyball. Coach Andrea Reed noted that it was the most successful season she had ever seen and that the silver medal at volleyball provincials was something the school hadn’t seen in 30 years.

Later in the school year, both the senior boys and senior girls basketball teams from FSS made it to the provincial championship tournament in March. The male Falcons ended the tournament with a fourth place finish, moving up one spot from their pre-tournament ranking, while the women’s team finished in fifth place after an original ranking of seventh.

“Thank you to the players for your continued dedication to athletics, to the coaches for volunteering their time to teach and support our players and to the parents and staff who volunteered their time to make this season a success,” said Coultry.
