Eight people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following a two-car crash involving a stolen vehicle on Wednesday afternoon in Abbotsford.

The collision took place at about 4 p.m. in the intersection of Blueridge Drive and Goldfinch Street in west Abbotsford.

Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Bird said the stolen vehicle hit a Dodge minivan with several occupants, causing it to leave the road and come to rest in a nearby yard.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate a trapped elderly passenger from the van.

The female driver of the stolen vehicle – a Suzuki SVU – fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash.

Officers found the 34-year-old woman shortly after and arrested her. Bird said the woman is a prohibited driver who is well-known to police.

The seven occupants of the van and the female suspect were transported by BC Ambulance to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Abbotsford Police collision reconstructionists were on the scene for several hours, and the investigation is continuing.
