South Okanagan fire brigade seeking donations for equipment

The Apex Fire Brigade needing donations for rescue equipment

The Apex Fire Brigade is looking to purchase some specialized equipment to help with rescues if a vehicle goes over an embankment in their region.

In order to rescue people in those situations, the volunteer unit requires some basic tools to do the job including, but not limited to: harnesses, stretcher basket, ropes, pulleys, belay devices, carabiners and various other hardware to safely execute a rescue.

To help get there, the brigade has started a GoFundMe page to raise $5,500 for the needed equipment.

The normal retail price of the needed equipment ranges from $10,000 to $15,000 but the society that operates the brigade has been able to source the needed materials for about half the price.

“We are asking the community to rally together with us in raising the funds needed for this life-saving equipment, every dollar will count towards reaching our goal of acquiring this equipment,” read the news release announcing the GoFundMe page. “This equipment will benefit all residents and visitors to the Apex community in the event of an emergency.

“We feel that raising funds with an explicitly set goal will allow us to show you exactly where your donations are going and how we are using them. We believe in being 100 per cent transparent with the community in regards to how we spend your donations.”

The brigade operates solely on donations to fund its operations, providing service to the community around the clock, seven days a week.

Earlier this summer, the group was gifted its first fire truck, which was a big step in acquiring full fire department certification.

The engine was donated by Bryan Reid Sr., the owner and founder of Pioneer Log Homes in William’s Lake, B.C., and star of the HGTV show Timber Kings.
