Six homes evacuated after gas leak in West Fernie

City of Fernie asks residents to stay away from Beaver St. area

At approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9 Fernie Fire and Emergency Services were on scene dealing with a gas leak in West Fernie.

Six homes on Beaver St. had to be evacuated and Beach Ave. was closed to all traffic after a gas line was hit while construction crews were working in the area.

Fortis BC crews travelled from Cranbrook to repair the problem. The evacuation order was expected to be in effect for four hours.

At 2:45 p.m. Fortis had repaired the gas line, and Beach Ave. was reopened to the public and the evacuation order was rescinded.
