• CFL legend Geroy Simon (pictured), a Cloverdale-area resident, will speak at Surrey’s Coyote Creek golf clubhouse on Friday evening (Nov. 18) during a brain-research gala dinner organized as part of the 25toLife project (see Twentyfivetolife.ca).

• At a gala held at Langley’s Newlands Golf and Country Club, Gene Simmons of KISS recently gave a $100,000 boost to Surrey’s Centre for Child Development and Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, and also auctioned off an autographed “blade” guitar of his.

• The World Council on City Data (WCCD), the global leader in standardized city data, has awarded the City of Surrey something called ISO 37120 Platinum Certification, which will allow Surrey to “compare best practices with other cities and measure its performance in relation to other cities in order to improve delivery of services to residents.”

• Surrey’s Rob Ross, a 40-year volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Langley, was an Award of Distinction winner at B.C.’s annual Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards, held during Crime Prevention Week (Nov. 1-7).

• Former Surrey RCMP inspector Garry Begg and Newton-North Delta MP/BCTF president Jinny Sims will be acclaimed the NDP’s MLA candidates for Surrey-Guildford and Surrey-Panorama, respectively, at the end of this month, according to an NDP press release.

• Surrey’s Molly Peters will be among 28 youth from across B.C. to receive the prestigious Silver Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Victoria on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19).

• Surrey registered nurse Katherine Villegas is among 17 award recipients in the 2016 Nursing Awards of Excellence; she received the ARNBC Outstanding Student Intern Recognition Award.
