There’s an exciting weekend planned in Vernon’s own winter wonderland.

The Putnam Creek challenging terrain at SilverStar Mountain Resort will open to skiers and snowboarders on Saturday.

But first – the village will light up for the holiday season Friday night.

The annual Christmas Light Up begins at 5 p.m. with vendors in the village. The mystical “Trail of Lights” snowshoe adventures begins at 5:30 (meet at Goodie Box), and free Sleigh Rides also begin then. The light show throughout the village runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Then warm up entertainment from the Kinshira Performance Troupe at 7 p.m. with spectacular fire jamming and a red hot pyro show. At 7:55, the village counts down for the light up followed by fireworks.

Before the fireworks expect a special visit from a surprise guest in red and white.

Then Saturday the expert terrain at Putnam Creek opens – typically the last of SilverStar’s four mountain faces to open for the season, but favoured and savoured by skiers and riders seeking an adrenaline rush.

“Conditions are really good at Putnam Creek. Temperatures have been considerable cooler on the north-facing slopes which has maintained the snow very well” said Brad Baker, operations director for SilverStar.

“Our grooming team have been out in full force and the addition of two new Pisten-bully 400s has continued our dedication for world-class grooming. Plenty of fresh corduroy to choose from including winch-groomed black diamond runs.”

For skiers and boarders who want to be the first to take on Putnam Creek, the Powder Gulch chair and the Home Run tee start spinning Saturday at 8:45 a.m.

Other resort openings this weekend include Paradise Camp, the restaurant located at the top of Powder Gulch, which opens for the season at 9:30 a.m. also on Saturday.

SilverGrill opens for dinner beginning Friday, Dec. 8, the same night of SilverStar’s annual Christmas Light Up, with wine dinners commencing next Sunday, Dec. 17.

Access to My1Pass winter activities are now available for the season, including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, fat biking, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. Skating at Brewers Pond currently is not available (weather permitting).
