Seniors’ Column

This week's column looks at a bereavement journal program.

A six-week bereavement program sponsored by the Nakusp Hospice Society is set to take place in a Nakusp location, running Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 6 through May 11.

It is modelled after the highly successful program which was developed by Susan Breiddal (BSW, MATP,) a palliative response team counsellor with the Victoria Hospice Society.

Facilitators Sue Mistretta, MA (Silverton) and Alice Watson, M.Ed (Burton) will provide a safe, supportive and confidential space for participants to explore their grief and to discover a healing journey which cultivates compassion and acceptance for the array of intense feelings and confusing thoughts experienced through loss.

This program is open to anyone who is going through a grieving process after losing someone close to them, whether the loss is recent or in the distant past.

Participants will explore grief through writing exercises (journalling), collage and other simple art processes. They will come to understand and normalize their grief experience and will learn hands-on skills for dealing with life after loss.

No experience in the fields of writing or art are required. Class size is limited to eight participants and the program fee is $35 (all learning materials will be provided.)

To register or for more information contact Sue at 358-2177 or soulgarden58@gmail.com with deadline set at April 1, 2017.
