Saanich residents will be among the first stage of Canada Post customers to adopt community mailboxes in Greater Victoria.
Door-to-door delivery is being phased out across Canada, beginning with 18,008 Greater Victoria home addresses by the fall of 2015, said an Oct. 23 release by Canada Post.
Saanichites will be affected in postal codes V9A, which includes a small corner of Saanich near the Gorge and Portage Inlet, and in V9B, which falls on the south west Granville neighbourhood.
The phase will affect five cities in addition to Saanich, Victoria, Langford, Colwood, Esquimalt, View Royal, as well as New Songhees 1A.
Each affected household is due to receive an information package this week with a mail-in survey which allows feedback about priorities and preferences for the new delivery method.
Postal Canada says no regular full-time or part-time employee will lose their job as a result of the phase, as the company expects to downsized through attrition as people leave the company.
