The Lake Run in Cumberland this weekend is a chance to have fun and raise money for a good cause. The Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre will host its second annual Lake Run in conjunction with Empire Days on Monday, and the Pregnancy Care Centre’s Julie Le Goff said it’s sure to be a blast.”It’s just going to be a lot of fun and it’s great for those who just want to come out for the run, and those who — last year we had lots of older ladies who walked it just to come out and support us,” said Le Goff. The entrance fee to the five-kilometre run/walk or 10-kilometre run/walk is $10, and proceeds go to the Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre and the Moms and Tots group at the Cumberland Recreation Centre.Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Cumberland Village Park and the run starts at noon. Pre-registration can also be done at the Pregnancy Care Centre at 758 Sixth St. in Courtenay. The race will start at the park, then head down Derwent Avenue and out to Comox Lake and back. Those participating in the five-kilometre run or walk can turn around at the halfway point.Participants are encouraged to get sponsors and there’s a $200 Walmart gift certificate for the person with the most sponsored donations. Sponsor sheets are available at www.facebook.com/cvpcclakerun or at the Pregnancy Care Centre. There will also be first, second and third place ribbons for men and women taking part in the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre run, as well as prize draws for all participants. The Pregnancy Care Centre has been serving the Comox Valley since 1991, offering services such as free pregnancy tests, peer options counselling, community referrals, abortion recovery help and support, a miscarriage and infant loss support group, and baby and maternity clothing. The Lake Run is raising money for the Pregnancy Care Centre to continue to offer its services and to help support its free clothing room.Last year, the Lake Run raised nearly $3,400 with a good turnout of runners and walkers, and this year Le Goff hopes the run will be even more successful.”I’m hoping to increase our numbers from — last year we had 70 participants — I’m hoping to have at least 100 this year, or more. As far as funds, well lets hope to get $5,000 this year,” said Le Goff. For more information, check the run’s Facebook page, or call 250-334-0058.writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com
