After a long, difficult journey, the Iraqi family sponsored by Team Sooke/Juan de Fuca has finally arrived.

The family was first approved to come to Canada in 2016, but was held up in Lebanon for almost two years due to government bureaucracy.

The family has been set up with accommodation and is ready to get their new life started in Sooke.

“What they most want now is to have an ordinary life and to give back to the community,” said Sharon Sterling, settlement coordinator for Team Sooke/Juan de Fuca in a press release. “They are already talking about volunteering.”

She said the family has been repeatedly expressing its gratitude to the people of Sooke and Juan de Fuca for giving them this opportunity for a safe future in our welcoming community.

“They are no longer refugees, they are newcomers to Canada,” Sterling said.
