A woodstove exchange program announced by the Regional District of Nanaimo last week offers increased rebates for those who switch to cleaner-burning fuel sources.

For 2018, the B.C. provincial government has increased the incentive structure to $400 from $250 for those who change from wood for their heating source, the RDN stated in a news release. Those who exchange an old woodstove for electric, gas, propane, or pellet-heating appliance are eligible to receive $400. Residents who exchange an old wood stove for a new, EPA-compliant woodstove are eligible to receive $250.

“It is clear that local governments around the province are committed to improving air quality in their communities,” stated RDN board chair Bill Veenhof. “The RDN is pleased to bring this popular rebate program back for our residents in 2018 as it supports our focus on protecting and enhancing our local environment.”

The rebates will remain while funds are available, with each region across B.C. allotted a limited amount of funding through the program on a first-come, first-served basis.

The British Columbia Lung Association administers the wood stove exchange program on behalf of the province and provides educational materials and support to participating communities.

The RDN says it is committed to providing educational resources and workshops in the region, which will be held later this year.

Because of the limited amount of rebate funding, the regional district recommended residents act early to avoid disappointment.
