Two people were arrested in Quesnel today (Wednesday, Nov. 4) after they failed to stop for the police and their vehicle was disabled with a spike belt.

At 8:40 a.m., the Quesnel RCMP Crime Reduction Unit observed a silver Ford Fusion with no license plate attached in the area of Bouchie Street in West Quesnel, according to a news release from the RCMP.

“When the police activated their emergency equipment, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic,” the release states. “To ensure the safety of the public, the police did not pursue the vehicle.”

Another officer saw the vehicle driving on Pinnacles Road about 15 minutes later. The Ford failed to stop for police again, and when it passed a second officer who was pulled over to the side of the road, the vehicle ran over a spike belt that deflated two tires.

The driver pulled over a short distance away, and both occupants were taken into custody without incident.

“The Crime Reduction Unit was patrolling areas of Quesnel with high crime rates and came across this vehicle,” Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Richard Weseen said in the release. “Their proactive enforcement of drug and property offenders is reducing crime and having a positive impact on the community.”

Thirty-three-year-old Travis Maurice Paul of Nazko was charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while prohibited. He was remanded to appear in court on Nov. 5.

The female passenger of the vehicle was released from custody without charges.
