Penticton Curling Club COVID cases increase

"Our hearts are with our members who are sick right now"

There are now four confirmed cases of COVID-19 from the Penticton Curling Club (PCC).

The local club closed last week after one of its members tested positive for the virus.

PCC manager Chris Jones said once they learned about the three more cases, they decided to remain closed until at least Dec. 7.

“Originally, we were going to be closed until Nov. 30 when we had one member test positive for COVID, but now that we have four members sick with COVID, the right thing to do is just stay closed,” said Jones.

“Our hearts are with our members who are sick right now. We hope they have a speedy recovery,” said Jones on Sunday.

One of the members Jones spoke to this weekend said his symptoms are similar to the many colds and flus he has had over the years.

“Our member thought his symptoms were just that, a flu, but he got tested and sure enough it was COVID,” Jones said.

The local curling club opened for the season with strict COVID safety protocols that went beyond what the provincial government was asking for.

“We have been very diligent. We even asked our members to wear masks on the ice since Nov. 20.”

Since opening, they have been doing temperature checks at the door as well as everyone has to sign in with their contact information.

“We are one of only a few curling clubs doing temperature checks,” he said. “But in all the time we’ve been doing the temperature checks, we’ve never had someone show a temperature.”

“Now we are wondering what else we can do to keep our members and staff safe?” he added.

The Okanagan has seen its COVID cases explode over the month of November.

“In reality, this disease makes its way around everywhere,” he said.

The Penticton Vees announced on Saturday that a player has tested positive for COVID. The entire team and staff are self-isolating.
