Parksville offers free tiles for Canada 150 Mosaic project

Refunds offered to those who have already paid for them

At Monday night’s meeting, Parksville council approved an expenditure to cover the cost of the Canada 150 Mural Mosaic project, a move that allows the City of Parksville to offer the tiles to residents for free. At this time, there are just fewer than 240 tiles up for grabs. For those people who have already purchased tiles, the city has announced it will refund their purchase.

Parksville was chosen to participate in the Canada 150 Mosaic project to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Its mural will be made up of 400 individual tiles painted by members of the community, which when assembled will create a mural that represents Parksville to the rest of Canada.

Process to receive a free mosaic tile:

• Those who have already purchased tiles will receive a refund when they come to the Community Park to paint their tile (Aug. 5 or 6).

• About 240 tiles will be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at

8 a.m.Monday, July 25. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

• Maximum four tiles per family.

• Those wishing to obtain a tile will need to fill out a form with name and email to receive a voucher, to be exchanged for a tile at one of the painting days. The online form is available at www.parksville.ca/cms.asp?wpID=510

• Canada 150 artists will facilitate painting days on Friday, Aug. 5 or Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Community Park as part of the Parksville Beach Festival activities.

• Please do not apply to receive a tile if you are not available to paint on either August 5 or August 6.

All skill levels and ages are invited to participate in this project. So far, more than 9,000 Canadians have painted tiles.

As a kick-off to the 150th birthday celebrations in 2017, Parksville’s mural will be unveiled at a community event in the fall and will be permanently installed at 100 Jensen Avenue East.
