Parksville city council approved new street names for the roads in Parksville Community Park at the Nov. 18 council meeting.

The road into the park from Corfield Street will be known as Salish Sea Drive, the road along the beach to Arbutus Point will be known as Sandcastle Drive and the road out of the park near the picnic shelter will be called Ravenhill Road.

The decision was made largely so that emergency responders could pinpoint locations in the park and respond to calls with greater accuracy.

“The Community Park Master Plan 2017 and the Parks, Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan 2018 recognized the need for signage and wayfinding,” said the city’s communications manager Deb Tardiff in a release.

The names all have significance to the area.

Ravenhill Road is named after Alice Ravenhill, the leader of the Parksville Women’s Institute in 1915. The group was instrumental in purchasing the park.

Sandcastle Drives recognizes the popular Beach Festival and sand sculpting competition.

Salish Sea Drive provides an opportunity to acknowledge the location of the Parksville Community Park within the traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples who historically lived along the southeastern coast of Vancouver Island.
