Parksville asks for help identifying veterans for special banner project

Program to honour veterans whose names are listed on Parksville cenotaph

The City of Parksville is asking for the public’s help completing their Veteran Banner Program.

“Earlier this year, council approved the city banner program intended to honour the veterans whose names are listed on the Parksville cenotaph. Banners will be placed on the lamp standards along the Island Highway from early October until after Remembrance Day,” read a release from the city. “As well, a section will be added to the city’s website with photos and where possible, information and stories about the veterans. There are 60 names on the cenotaph and we currently have been able to find images of varying quality for 30 veterans.”

They need help finding images and information about the remaining veterans and are asking anyone with information to reach out.

“By reaching out to the public for help, we hope to find connections to these veterans that we have not been able to access through our research. The city and the Parksville Museum and Archives are seeking photographs to use in the banner program and also learn about the veterans to be able to add to their stories,” read the release. “Once we have completely exhausted our research and as a last resort, we would create a banner for a veteran but without a photograph or image and expect this project to continue through 2021.”

For more information about the banner project or if you have photographs to share, please contact Deb Tardiff, manager of communications, at 250-954-3073 or dtardiff@parksville.ca. The city’s website lists veterans they’re still seeking photographs of, as well as the complete list of veterans names shown on the cenotaph.
