A 22-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats after an incident at a convenience store in Maple Ridge.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to a convenience store in the 20300-block of Dewdney Trunk Road on Monday around 5:15 p.m. after an employee observed a young female allegedly attempting to steal items from the store.

When the employee approached the suspect, a male intervened and allegedly threatened the employee with a weapon, police said.

“It is believed the couple were working together, and fled prior to police arrival,” Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk said.

“The employee did everything right. She got a good description of the suspects and was able to relate the events to the attending officers.”

Based on key evidence, she added, the identity of the male was learned, and both suspects were arrested without incident at a nearby residence.

Mackenzie Russell has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

The investigation into the allegations relating to the female, 19, is ongoing.
