Dedication, selflessness and responsiveness are just some of the words that define the volunteers at Oceanside Hospice, especially in their Equipment Loan Program, said society executive director Andy Telfer in a news release.
“These volunteers often help people at one of the toughest times in their lives,” he said, singling out the volunteer equipment delivery drivers who he said are “often responding at a moment’s notice.”
When someone needs medical equipment to help with a loved one who has been diagnosed as palliative, the hospice volunteers take action, delivering beds, wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers and more.
“What strikes me most so far is the deep appreciation all of the clients have for the service,” said new volunteer Rob Hawes. “Even with all that the spouses and children are going through, the appreciation is almost universal.”
But the service is so appreciated, it continues to grow and they need more help.
Volunteers with a valid driver’s licence, good driving record and who are comfortable lifting medical equipment are invited to help out.
Telfer said the society’s mission is to offer early, continuous, compassionate support to individuals — and their families — facing advanced illness, death, and bereavement.
Oceanside Hospice offers many services including bereavement help and a new hospice service at Trillium Lodge.
