Oak Bay put some cash toward the clearing of old boats in Cadboro Bay.
Oak Bay approved a $4,000 grant in care of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club one of the partners in the Dead Boat Society, a partnership between municipalities and community groups working to clear out the vessels and remnants in Cadboro Bay.
“This one really makes me happy. It’s just getting something done which is very satisfying,” said Kevin Murdoch, acting mayor. “It comes about largely due to the volunteers that are making the effort to do it.”
“The yacht club agreed to take it as a holding agent and they can distribute it,” he said. “This allows us to do our part for it.”
The community volunteer effort, which includes the Cadboro Bay Residents’ Association, Veins of Life Watershed Society, Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the Community Association of Oak Bay, cleared several tonnes of derelict vessel debris this spring.
A handful of large debris, including three boat hulls remain on the beach. The funds come from Oak Bay’s $10,000 in unallocated grant funds for 2017.
