Furstenau guest speaker at CRA AGM
Lake Shawnigan community leader and Cowichan Valley Regional District Director Sonia Furstenau will be the guest speaker at the Chemainus Residents’ Association AGM May 10.
“Like many other community associations, CRA was born of a struggle over a particular issue,” said Vice Chair Bernie Jones.
The community association coalesced ten years ago around opposition to development in Echo Heights, and the desire to see the area preserved as park land.
“After an eight year struggle, CRA was finally able to get council’s support for preserving 91 per cent of the Echo Heights area as park,” Jones recalled.
Renamed Wul’aam Park by North Cowichan, a CRA committee now “works closely with the municipality on preservation tasks,” Jones said.
“CRA now has to expand its scope, addressing other Chemainus issues.”
Furstenau will talk about her community’s ongoing fight to prevent the dumping of contaminated soil in its watershed. The Shawnigan Residents Association stepped forward to take the leadership role once the issue arose, Jones said.
The CRA’s AGM takes place Tuesday, May 10 at the Chemainus Senior’s Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the meeting will run between 6:30 and 8 p.m. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org.
