B.C. Housing has found a new location to develop a 62-unit housing project in Penticton for residents who are either experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The province is purchasing properties at 594 and 600 Winnipeg St. The two properties are flanked on one side by the Christian Science Church and on the other by St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, which hosts the Soupateria soup kitchen.
According to the B.C. Housing press release, this location is ideal for supportive housing, due to its close proximity to social services in the downtown core, as well as public transit routes.
In May, after a public hearing, Penticton city council voted against giving B.C. Housing the go-ahead for 52 units of supportive housing near Main Street and Green Avenue.
The new homes will be built by Penticton’s Metric Modular as part of the Building BC: Rapid Response to Homelessness program.
The building will be operated by ASK Wellness, a non-profit housing operator that is experienced working with people experiencing homelessness. The building will be staffed 24/7 to provide support services, such as access to mental health and addiction recovery programs, life skills training and employment skills programming.
Applicants will go through a thorough assessment process to ensure the building has an appropriate mix of tenants matched up with the right supports.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2018, and be complete by spring 2019.
BC Housing is inviting neighbouring residents and businesses to learn more about the project at an information session on Sept. 10, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cheers the Church, 639 Main St.
