The building at 711 Tenth Street, across the street from Selkirk’s Tenth Street Campus in Fairview, once served as the student union building and a pub during the days of the David Thompson University Centre. It has since been used as an international school and a church.
On Feb. 5 the owners of the building applied to have the property rezoned from institutional to residential so they can renovate the main floor to accommodate three one bedroom rental units. Currently it has offices on the main floor and two one bedroom units in the basement.
Council passed the zoning change and a change to the Official Community Plan the point of second reading. But before the changes can be finalized, the city will hold a public hearing on March 19 at which it will hear from the neighbours.
“All other properties adjacent to 711 Tenth Street are zoned R1, Low Density Residential,” according to materials presented to council by its planning staff.
“As the neighbourhood is predominantly residential, the proposed rezoning is more consistent with the character of the neighbourhood than the current institutional zone. The application is also consistent with the Official Community Plan, as it will be providing multi -unit housing near the Tenth Street Campus, and is located in proximity to bus routes, commercial services, and existing multi-unit residential development.”
The public hearing will be held in city council chambers at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 19.
Written submissions must be received at city hall by 4:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing.
