Nelson Search and Rescue was called out to Valhalla Provincial Park on Tuesday afternoon after a 23-year-old female hiker from Quebec fell from Gimli peak.
The currently unidentified woman, who was living in Nelson at the time of her fall, was ascending Mt. Gimli in a party of three and suffered a fatal fall from near the summit of the mountain.
The two hiking partners scaled down the mountain to find their friend, one hiking for 2.5 hours to contact RCMP and the other searching for, finding, and staying with the victim until Search and Rescue arrived.
It was a difficult recovery in complex terrain. Support was received from B.C. Emergency Health Services and from Castlegar Search and Rescue.
