‘Natural causes’ behind South Surrey teacher’s death: coroner

The sudden death last June of popular Earl Marriott Secondary teacher Nicola Baker has been deemed due to 'undetermined natural causes.'

The sudden death last June of popular Earl Marriott Secondary teacher Nicola Baker has been deemed the result of “undetermined natural causes.”

Baker, 38, died June 6.

According to a coroner’s report released to Peace Arch News, the mother of four was found unresponsive by her husband shortly before 8 a.m.

Investigation found no evidence of trauma, foul play, significant medical history or disease; a toxicology analysis was also negative.

“Although the exact cause of death remains undetermined, this investigation has not elicited any evidence that supports a plausible unnatural cause, therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the death is due to undetermined natural causes,” ruled coroner Tar Devine.

Baker had taught Grade 8 to 12 students in her time at the high school, but had taught mostly Grade 10s in the 2015-16 school year.

Born and raised in South Surrey, she was the youngest of three sisters, and part of an “enormous” family that included at least three other teachers.
