Nanaimo summer farmers’ market opens for season

Island Roots summer farmers' market opened this week for its 10th summer season at Beban Park

The Island Roots Farmers’ market commenced business for its 10th summer season at Beban Park this week.

The opening ceremony included speeches by representatives from local government and Island Roots Market Co-operative and the First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo choir, the Fabulous Fufonics, performed songs written for the event.

Island Roots Market Co-operative is working toward establishing a permanent year-round farmers’ market in Nanaimo, but currently runs a market in Pleasant Valley Hall through the winter months and in Beban Park in the summer.

Vendors from across the mid Island at Wednesday’s market offered everything from fresh vegetables, soaps and sauces to frozen yogurt, to gin and vodka from a craft distillery.

The summer market hours are Wednesdays 4-6 p.m.
