Nanaimo RCMP have an air compressor they’d like to return to its owner.

According to police, on July 15 a local business owner witnessed a man pull an air compressor from the back of a pickup truck, hide the device under his shirt and then nonchalantly walk off with it.

Upon seeing the suspicious behaviour she decided to follow the man and a short time later saw him hide the unit behind a tree in the 100 block of Victoria Road and walk away.

The woman stayed nearby and flagged down a City of Nanaimo bylaws officer who was driving by who picked up the compressor and brought it to Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

Investigators have contacted the owner of the truck the compressor was taken from, who told them the compressor wasn’t his. The serial number was checked too and the compressor hadn’t been reported stolen.

The suspect is Caucasian, 5-foot-10 with a slim build, crooked front teeth and was wearing a blue jacket.

“This was great work,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said in a press release. “The witness didn’t put herself in harm’s way and her efforts were paid off with the recovery of the compressor. Now all we need to do is find its lawful owner.”

Anyone who has had a compressor stolen from a worksite or residence, is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
