Car accidents, a break-in, the Cops for Cancer ride and more from the police beat

RCMP assistant commissioner Norm Lipinski paid a visit to Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment on Thursday to formally inspect its officers.

All the Mounties on duty were in uniform and two officers donned the ceremonial red serge.

The police officers marched into formation lead by Staff Sgt. Major Dave Field and Staff Sgt. Andrew Martin.

Operations officer Insp. Dave Fleugel took the position of “right marker”, while Ridge Meadows Supt. Dave Walsh joined asst. commission Lipinski in inspecting the officers.

“I’m happy to report we passed this morning’s inspection.” said Walsh. “This exercise is meant to bolster esprit de corps and gets all of our members back to their basic training days when this was a daily occurrence.”


Gravel spill

A truck driver faces Motor Vehicle Act charges for spilling a load of gravel onto an on-ramp to the Golden Ears Bridge.

Police were called to the ramp off Lougheed Highway at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday after the trailer hauling gravel overturned.

The contents of the trailer blocked off two lanes of traffic for three hours while crews cleaned up the spill and towed the trailer away.

Police are satisfied speed was a contributing factor in the crash and Motor Vehicle Act charges were laid against the driver of the truck.



Jewellery was stolen from an apartment during a break-in Tuesday in downtown Maple Ridge.

A thief or thieves pried open the door to the suite on 222nd Street, stealing three pieces of expensive jewelry and a laptop computer.

The theft happened sometime between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The jewellery taken was a woman’s watch and two pairs of earrings, all made of white gold.


Pedestrian struck

A woman was taken to hospital Monday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing a Maple Ridge street.

The 45-year-old was walking across 224th Street at 124th Avenue around 8:15 a.m. when she was struck.

Two off-duty firefighters, from Maple Ridge and Port Coquitlam, witnessed the accident and tended to the woman until paramedics arrived.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Police continue to the investigate the accident.


Cops for Cancer

The 2011 Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast made its annual visit to Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment on Tuesday.

The cyclists arriving at 3:30 p.m. and were greeted by the detachment’s senior management, other Mounties and municipal staff.
