Local liquor store one of top five donating to flood relief

The till donations raised $66,000.

The Grand Forks government liquor store was one of the top five in the province to collect donations for flood relief going to the Canadian Red Cross.

In a press release issued last week, the BC government confirmed that $66,000 was raised for the Red Cross through the till donation program.

“As flood-recovery efforts continue, the effects will be felt for many months to come,” said Kimberley Nemrava, vice-president of Canadian Red Cross, British Columbia and Yukon. “We extend our heartfelt thanks for this significant contribution, on behalf of those people impacted by flooding.”

The campaign ran from May 22 to June 24 in all BC liquor stores. Customers could donate in either $2 or $5 increments. All donations to the Red Cross are being matched by the BC government until July 31 to a total of $20 million.

The top five stores that collected donations are:

1. Westwood Centre (Port Coquitlam): $7,089

2. Terrace: $5,006

3. Kelowna Orchard Park: $4,565

4. Kamloops North: $2,915

5. Grand Forks: $2,203v
