Ironman hopes dashed for Vernon

City officials told community not shortlisted for major event

Vernon’s dreams of hosting the world have fallen short.

The City of Vernon has learned from World Triathlon Corporation that it has not been short-listed to host Ironman Canada.

“ WTC told us that we put in a fantastic bid and the community support was evident,” said Kevin Poole, economic development manager.

“However, the primary decision was based on where they felt their athletes wanted to go, so they looked closely at what they considered to be resort communities and “mid-major” markets.  WTC said there was nothing that we could have done differently to change the decision and our bid was very competitive. In that respect, I think we should be proud of what we accomplished in such a short period of time.”

WTC’s short list includes Kelowna, Whistler and Huntsville, Ont.

“I am disappointed that we are out of the running to host Ironman, but I’m proud of how well our staff, council and community pulled together and showcased our community at its best. I thank our whole community for that,” said Mary-Jo O’Keefe, a Vernon councillor.

The World Triathlon Corporation will announce the new host community from Kona, Hawaii Oct. 10.
