Local hero Cole Jackson was recognized at Chilliwack City Hall Tuesday for putting himself in harm’s way to help a local senior who was in serious trouble.

Jackson was taking his daughter to McDonald’s last month when he spotted a man on a scooter stuck on the railroad tracks just as a train was coming.

He jumped off his bike, got his daughter to safety, and grabbed the man just as the train bore down on them.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz offered her thanks and a certificate of recognition for his heroic actions.

“You saw the gentleman get stuck on the tracks. You heard the train coming and you put yourself in harm’s way to get the scooter out of the path of the oncoming train.”

She said she could only imagine the adrenaline rushing through his body at the time.

“You exemplify everything that is great about our community,” said Gaetz. “You showed you think more about others that you do yourself, and we didn’t want to let the opportunity go by to say thank you.”

When the mayor asked why he did it, Jackson replied: “I was very blessed. The lord must have given me wings.”

Gaetz replied that he certainly must have had “angels watching” on that day.

The crowd applauded, and Jackson’s children were heard at the back of the room saying proudly, “Yay, daddy.”
