SURREY — What’s the most fun you can have with your Christmas tree, after picking the perfect pine and trimming it with decorations and tinsel? When it comes to taking down your holiday tree and disposing of it properly, Surrey’s tree chipping events put the fun in fundraiser.

Doug Thomas, who runs the Knights of Columbus annual Christmas Tree Chipping event, says this is the affair’s 10th year, and they usually see around 180 trees.

“The chips have been taken to a nursery in the past, we’ve taken them to a farm… they’re basically being recycled,” Thomas said.

Other tree chipping events South of the Fraser will benefit high school dry grads, churches and the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society. Some will include other recycling opportunities, like electronic disposal and bottle drives.
