Galaxy Cinema closed in Vernon for safety reasons

Polson mall officials say the theatre will reopen to the public today

Vernon’s Galaxy Cinema was abruptly closed Tuesday, forcing movie-goers out on to the street.

A decision was made to close the theatre at about 6:30 p.m. after a structural engineer discovered that the top of a brick structural beam had come apart.

“It’s fairly minor but we didn’t want to take any chances,” said Pat Davies, Shops at Polson Park property manager.

“It’s nothing anyone caused. Sometimes things wear out.”

Because a structural engineer wasn’t available until late in the day, a temporary beam could not be installed in time to keep the theatre open. A temporary beam is being installed today.

“It (theatre) will be open tonight (Wednesday),” said Davies.

It’s anticipated that a permanent repair will be completed within a couple of days.

Officials with Cineplex Entertainment support the decision of the landlord to close the theatre Tuesday.

“The safety and security of our staff and guests is a paramount concern,” said Pat Marshall, Cineplex vice-president of communications.
