First big South Island windstorm leaves thousands without power

Hydro crews restoring power quickly to West Shore residents

The first big wind storm of the fall season thrashed the southern portion of the Island Thursday evening and high winds were continuing Friday morning.

BC Hydro crews have been working around the clock and have restored power to many Greater Victoria residents, including the West Shore, which took a walloping in the early hours of Friday.

By 9 a.m. BC Hydro was reporting power restored to nearly 6,000 customers with only a handful still without power. Roughly 8,000 customers across the southern portion of the Island were still reporting power outages at that time.

At the height of the storm, winds were estimated to be blowing at 40 km/h and gusting up to 70 km/h. Those were expected to ease up by late morning.
