Parksville fire hall will remain closed to the public for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, and will not host its annual open house.

For 2020, Fire Prevention Week is still in full force but will be done primarly online. Through social media, the fire hall will post fire safety tips each day of the week, through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The theme of ‘Serve up fire safety in the kitchen’ will bring awareness to fire safety into people’s homes.

Residents wanting to participate can do so by entering the Parksville Fire photo contest. Parents and children are challenged to send in a photo showing how they practise fire safety in the kitchen. At the end of the week, one photo will be chosen to receive a prize pack that includes a smoke alarm, Parksville Fire water bottle and more.

Photos can be submitted by email to fireprevention@parksville.ca, and must include contestants name and a brief description about their photo. Submission deadline is Friday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m.

Fire safety packages for children can be picked up at the Parksville fire station between Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will include games and stickers.

Fire Prevention Week in Parksville will run from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10.
