Fire claims life in Forest Knolls

A blaze destroyed a small building near Fort Langley.

One person died in a fire that destroyed a pool house in a home in rural Langley near 232nd Street Wednesday night.

Langley Township firefighters arrived at 9:45 p.m. to the home south of Fort Langley and found a detached building off the main house was ablaze, said district fire chief Russ Jenkins.

There were some indications early on that the building might have been occupied, but it wasn’t until 45 minutes after they started fighting the fire that it was confirmed that someone was in the small building.

The small pool house may have been used as a suite.

There would have been no way for firefighters to enter to try to remove anyone, Jenkins said. Anyone entering the building would not have survived, he said.

Three fire halls were called out and 22 firefighters worked to douse the blaze.

They located the victim of the fire once the main fire had been doused, Jenkins said.

The detached pool house was destroyed, and a nearby coach house attached to the main home by a breezeway was also damaged. The main house suffered smoke damage.

Fire investigators were to arrive at the scene Thursday morning, and the RCMP and BC Coroner were also on the scene to investigate.

So far there is no indication that the fire was suspicious, but nothing can be ruled out until there is a full investigation, Jenkins said.

“The crew seems to be coping,” Jenkins said of the firefighters’ response to a fatal blaze.
