Fernie SAR assists Kimberley with evacuation

Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR) was called in to assist Kimberley SAR with the rescue of an injured hiker this week.

A 35 year old man was celebrating Fathers Day on a hike with his dad up Bootleg Mountain when he fell in the snow and slid at speed into a tree. As a result, the man sustained a serious lower leg injury.

Team members from Fernie SAR trained in Class D fixed line (CDFL) rescues worked with Bighorn Helicopters to safely rescue the man and his father. The pair were then delivered to Kimberley SAR for further treatment and transport to the hospital.

According to a Facebook post by Fernie SAR, “all three Fernie SAR CDFL technicians who participated are fathers and were happy to help make this Father’s Day end right.”
