Fernie businesses, individuals honoured

Martin Brock was named Fernie's 2019 Citizen of the Year

The Fernie Businesses Excellence Awards were held Friday night at the Best Western Plus Fernie Mountain Lodge, and honoured the dedication and hard work of many.

John Pumphrey, president of North Coal and title sponsor of the evening, congratulated all those present, and thanked them for their dedication.

“Small businesses are at the heart of our communities,” he said. “They take commitment, action and desire in order to… be successful.”

The first award of the evening was given to an unsuspecting Martin Brock, Fernie’s 2019 Citizen of the Year. A man behind the scenes in many events around town, Brock was honoured for his dedication to the community.

Lynn Henderson was named Volunteer of the year, the Fernie Seniors Centre was awarded the Spirit of Fernie award, and Snow Valley Lodging was awarded Community Tourism Award.

The crew at Gearhub was awarded the Outstanding Customer Service Award, Stocked Co. was named New Business of the Year, and the Fernie Distillers were named Entrepreneurs of the Year.

The staff at McGiver Woodworks were named Team of the Year, Western Financial was named Employer of the Year, and Coal Town Goods was named Business of the Year.

The Bridge Bistro won People’s Choice Award, and an emotional Walter Ingram accepted his new title as recipient of the Chamber Legacy Award.
