Drunk driver jailed

An Enderby senior will have plenty of time to contemplate the seriousness of his actions.

David Alexander Beattie, 75, was sentenced in Vernon Provincial Court Wednesday to a total of 34 months in jail, and was given a 10-year driving prohibition following a two-car accident on Highway 97 near the Swan Lake overpass Jan. 13.

Beattie pleaded guilty to one count of impaired driving, one count of flight from a peace officer and one count of driving while disqualified.

Beattie was given 34 months on the impaired charge, and two years in jail for each of the other two counts, but the time will be served concurrently.

An off-duty police officer witnessed the crash between a Ford Windstar van and a Toyota Matrix rental car that was being driven by a man from Knoxville, Tenn., shortly before 8 p.m.

Police reported the driver of the van was observed fleeing the area, running across a field toward Temptasian Restaurant. The man allegedly entered the restaurant, bleeding.

A police officer patrolling Anderson Way heard about the accident and the suspect, and found the man in the parking lot of the restaurant.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries in the accident.
