There’s usually something unusual going on in the kitchen of Double R Pizza and Subs.
Whether it’s the Holiday Feast pizza, featuring gravy, chicken, stuffing, and then cranberry sauce added post-baking, or the Pickler, a pie cooked with a creamy garlic base, pickles and a whole lot of cheese, the menu is as diverse as it is ever-changing.
“I don’t like pizza—weird right?” said Angela Reiter, who co-operates the restaurant with her husband and fellow gastronomic mastermind, Craig.
“So anything that doesn’t taste like pizza, but can be cooked like pizza, that’s what I like.”
That’s not to say the restaurant can’t do a traditional pizza well, as Angela counts the Grizzly, a straight up meat lovers, as the most popular pizza on the menu.
Double R Pizza and Subs has been serving Clearwater and area for 17 years, delivering from Vavenby to Little Fort and Helmcken Falls to Dunn Lake, and the Reiters said the future of the restaurant looks promising, with plans to expand the inside of the shop and possibly open new locations.
In the nearly two decades of operation Double R has gained a devoted fan base and also lets customers name its culinary creations via social media.
“We put the names out for contests because we’ll come up with the creation, but we let other people pick the names for them,” Angela said. She also added not every item that’s created makes it to the menu.
“There’s a lot of stuff we’ve created, thrown it out there and Clearwater hasn’t responded and it’s just like okay, it’s gone. See you later!”
Craig said the restaurant has gotten a lot busier in recent years, in large part due to social media, and the fact the couple tries its best to cater to people’s specific dietary needs.
Some menu items include dairy free, gluten free and vegan options, making their pizzas available to higher variety of customers, and with Double R always updating its menu, the choices never get stale.
Donairs are also on the horizon at Double R, which means donair pizza, wraps and subs, as pretty much anything that makes it to the menu ends up getting the full treatment as an option across different food platforms.
Other ways the restaurant is evolving, as mentioned, includes ambitions of expanding both the interior of the current location and the business in general, though the Reiters insist Clearwater will always be home to the flagship location.
“We are in the midst of trying to find a new place to put our business, like the highway, but there’s just nothing available here right now, though we’ve been kicking it here so long, we don’t mind,” Craig said of the 117 Clearwater Station Rd. location.
“We’d like to expand into more cities; Kamloops is going to be our test pilot once we can find something suitable and affordable there.”
