Coombs hosts cannabis hearing

Meeting scheduled for Feb. 6 at Bradley Centre

The Regional District of Nanaimo will be hosting a public hearing on cannabis production facilities in Coombs Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The public hearing will be held at the Bradley Centre main hall (975 Shearme Rd.) at 7 p.m. The public hearing is for an Electoral Area F zoning and subdivison bylaw that, if adopted, would amend existing zoning regulations to allow for cannabis production in Industrial 1 and 3 zones. The proposed bylaw amendment would also include new or revised definitions to the general regulations section to reflect the anticipated federal legalization of cannabis.

The proposed amendments would also permit cannabis production on lands within the Agricultural Land Reserve and the Industrial 2 zone that currently permits medical marijuana production. The RDN’s bylaws currently don’t have regulations on non-medical cannabis production.

At last Tuesday’s (Jan. 23) regular board meeting, the RDN board of directors passed a motion for the RDN Electoral Area F zoning and subdivison bylaw amendment to be introduced and read twice. The board also approved the public hearing, which will be chaired by Director Julian Fell or his alternate.

Written submissions for the public hearing must be submitted to the RDN office by 4:30 p.m Feb. 5. For more information, visit www.rdn.bc.ca/cannabis-production-facilities-faq.
