Eight names will appear on the ballot sheet at Saturday’s byelection to fill a vacant seat on Comox council.
The list includes former Comox councillors Don Davis, Dennis Strand, Amie Anderson and Barbara Price, and first-time candidates Patrick McKenna, Hugh MacKinnon, Nico teWinkel and Derek Bouchard.
Candidate names were drawn from a hat to determine the order of appearance on the ballot sheet. Bouchard’s name will appear at the top, followed by MacKinnon, Price, Davis, Anderson, teWinkel, McKenna and Strand.
The winner will serve the remaining period of the three-year term held by the late Ray Crossley, who passed away last year. The term runs until December of this year, when a mayor and council will be elected to three-year terms.
Saturday’s vote will be open to registered voters from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre at 1801 Beaufort Ave. in Comox. There is also an advanced voting opportunity Wednesday (Jan. 12) at the same time and place.
Those qualifying as non-resident property electors may register at the time of voting by completing a registration form. Two pieces of identification are required. Proof of property ownership is also required.
A list of registered voters will be posted until 4:30 p.m. Friday at Comox Town Hall. It will also be posted during the vote. Electors can request personal information be omitted from the list due to privacy concerns.
