Yesterday afternoon the Canadian Coast Guard responded to a report of a sinking vessel near April Point.

The MV Salmon Seeker, owned by Oak Bay Marine Group, was undergoing maintenance and started taking in water, said Susan Williams, spokesperson for the coast guard.

Divers patched the hole in the 176 ft vessel and though the coast guard is still on site, Williams said it is no longer an issue.

“They put some absorbent boom around the site just to make sure but right now there doesn’t look like there are any issues,” she said.

There was a small sheen observed inside the boomed off area, likely due to de-watering of the engine room, Williams added and the coast guard will continue to take measures to minimize any impact to public safety and the environment.

Western Canada Marine Response Corporation also responded to the incident.

Oak Bay Marine Group was contacted and is working with the coast guard Williams added.
