City of Terrace gets a rainbow crosswalk

Project taking shape in the early morning hours of today

The CITY of Terrace’s pastel-coloured rainbow crosswalk is being painted in front of city hall this morning.

An early shift of two city workers appeared after 4 a.m. to first close off the intersection and then to mark out the lines for the distinctive colours.

The crosswalk project was approved by city council last year but the project had to wait until a new layer of asphalt was laid down a few weeks ago.

The crosswalk denotes the city’s recognition of its LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, or Questioning) community.

Workers also spread a thin layer of a grit-like substance over the paint to give pedestrians better traction on rainy and winter days.

Terrace is not the only community in the northwest to undertake such a venture.

Prince Rupert finished its project recently and Smithers did the same last week although in the latter community, the colour orange was missing.
