Chilliwack school board tidies up its own governance policies

Question periods, rules of order among policy updates at the board table

It’s another year of “housekeeping” for the Chilliwack School Board.

One of the main roles of the board is to create policy for the district and its partners. This year, the board is focusing on their 200 series of policies, which pertain to the board and its own conduct.

So far this year, they’ve addressed board governance, public meetings and question periods. While those policies have changes that were heavily debated, the most recent one on the board’s agenda was not.

At their March 12 meeting, they approved the current wording for the policy regarding rules of order. They were also going to approve a policy that outlines planning meetings. But that was removed from the agenda unanimously, so the board could further discuss it.

Board Chair Dan Coulter said the public can expect to see more of the policies about the board coming up in the meetings ahead, as they work to revise old wording and clear up policies. Almost all board policies were reviewed over the past few years by the previous board, he said, and that task is now almost finished.
