A Chilliwack homeowner grappled with an intruder who broke into his garage early Sunday morning, and held him until police arrived.

But police are advising homeowner’s not to take the law into their own hands.

“Someone who is breaking into your house likely has weapons with them in order to follow through with their intentions,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

The homeowner in this case was not injured, but “the potential was there,” she said.

Awakened by a house alarm, the homeowner heard someone rummaging through his garage and went out to confront the intruder.

The pair was outside on the street, with the homeowner trying to hold the suspect, when police arrived.

A 31-year-old Chilliwack man arrested at the scene is facing charges of break-and-enter and possession of break-in tools. He will appear later in court.

“We really don’t want to encourage people to take the law into their own hands,” Wolbeck said.
