Charge laid in Bella Vista Road crash

A Vernon woman is facing a charge of impaired driving and was ticketed for texting while driving following a Sunday night accident.

Just before 9 p.m., members of the RCMP’s North Okanagan Traffic Services were called to an accident on Bella Vista Road at Davison Road, and officers identified the driver of a 2002 Toyota Camry as the vehicle’s owner.

“She was still in the vehicle and admitted to recent consumption of alcohol,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The 21-year-old woman is a Novice driver.”

As open liquor containers were found in the vehicle, police read the driver an Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand. The ASD was administered and officers obtained a “fail” result.

The driver was detained for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and was charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than .08

But the driver’s troubles didn’t end there.

“The investigation has determined that she had been travelling east on Bella Vista Road, texting while driving and collided with a westbound 2010 red Jeep which left the roadway after being hit,” said Molendyk. “She then collided with a third vehicle also westbound on Bella Vista.”

Several occupants were taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital as a precaution, but no major injuries resulted from the crashes.

The driver has been released on a promise to appear in court at a later date for the impaired driving charge.
