Cell phones target of RCMP campaign

It’s a day of love on Thursday, and Vernon RCMP want drivers to remember their loved ones at home.

As part of a province-wide, month-long campaign, Vernon RCMP will conduct traffic enforcement Thursday – Valentine’s Day – targeting drivers distracted by using electronic devices such as cell phones.

“I think there will be PSAs (public service announcements) on the radio stations but the focus is definitely on Thursday,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

“Don’t use a cell phone while driving. Put your focus on the road and get home safe to your loved ones.”

RCMP in B.C. are cracking down on drivers caught using their cell phones while driving, either talking and holding the phone, or text messaging.

Drivers are allowed to use hands-free devices.

Electric razors can also be considered an electronic device that can distract a driver.
