Canucks’ loss prompts vandalism in Courtenay

Comox Valley RCMP and the Courtenay Fire Department were busy Wednesday night in Courtenay dealing with numerous dumpster fires and other acts of vandalism, following the Vancouver Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final.

Comox Valley RCMP and the Courtenay Fire Department were busy Wednesday night in Courtenay dealing with numerous dumpster fires and other acts of vandalism, following the Vancouver Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final.

Shortly before midnight, RCMP received a call of an assault on a 45-year-old local man.  The man had approached three younger males after they set fire to a dumpster behind the Panago Pizza on Duncan Avenue in Courtenay.

When approached,  the three males proceeded to punch and kick the male in the head and stomach. The male was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening but includes much bruising, swelling and some abrasions.

Along with the assistance of the canine unit, one of the three suspects, a 23-year-old Courtenay man was apprehended and taken into custody.

One of the other suspects is a 6’3″ man, with short brown hair, approximately 20 years old, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans with a back pack.

The second male is described a  5’10”, with light coloured hair, brush cut style, approximately 20 years old, wearing a Kesler Canucks jersey and jeans.

Along with two other dumpster fires, the Velvet Underground Hair Group on Simms Street in Courtenay had the front window smashed with a brick. It is unknown if these events are connected at this time and they remain under investigation.
