Barriere Star/Journal Christmas Story winners announced

The annual Star/Journal Christmas Story Contest received a wonderful number of entries this year from area youngsters. Two divisions were offered; Division 1 for youth from kindergarten to grade 3, and Division 2 for grade 4 to grade 7. Young writers had the choice of three subject titles to create their 300 words or less submission: The dog who saved Santa, How would you bring Christmas to your community?, or The day after Christmas at our house.

The most popular title hands down was ‘The dog who saved Santa’, giving our young authors a great opportunity to let their imagination and creativity come to the forefront. We especially appreciated the drawings that some youngsters added to their submissions.

This year we had over 50 submissions, with a good number coming from Mrs. Oates’ and Mrs. Macdougall’s Barriere Elementary School classes. Our three judges (courtesy of Barriere and Area Literacy Outreach) really had their work cut out for them to find the three winners in each category.

The judges did not know the names of the youngsters, only their age group. Amazingly, when all the tallying was done, one family had three winners, taking the top spot in both divisions and a close second behind. This is a noteworthy accomplishment and we congratulate the Farrow family on their budding young authors.

The winners in Division 1: 1st Grace Farrow, 2nd Tessa Salle, 3rd Thomas Pullen. Honourable mentions (in no specific order) go to: Teagan Allen, Josephine Crosman, Aiden Murphy, Liam Murphy, and Charlotte Crosman.

Winners in Division 2 are: 1st Bobby-Rae Farrow, 2nd Curtis Farrow, 3rd was a tie – Dayna Underhill and Linden (last name not provided). Honourable Mentions (all students from Mrs. Macdougall’s class) go to: Dontay, Tyla, Taylor, Jeff, Thomas, Delyn, Jeremy, Tristan and Anthony.
